Learn to fly

The great fish heaves a sigh, but not impatiently. He lingers in the air thoughtfully and finally replies, “Little Maye, if you cannot walk, and you cannot swim, then the only option left is to learn to fly.”

Here we have possibly my two oldest original characters : Maye the china doll and LaoYu (pronounced Law-you) the paper kite. Yes, the fish is a kite but I thought the string ruined the composition so did away with it I always found those fish kites very intriguing and beautiful.. and ironic..


Quick storyline!
Maye is a made-in-China doll who was imported to America. She has everything a doll could ask for, but by some turn of events, gets shipped back to China. Once there, she finds herself in a secondhand store/ pawn shop, deprived of everything she had held dear. However, all isn't as terrible as it seems; she meets many queer yet interesting acquaintances and with them, embarks on many adventures. (most of which are based off existing Chinese tales ) Through them, she assimilates the culture she had once rejected.

This story was inspired by my life. And the Chinese culture I was exposed to all throughout my life Maye and LaoYu and all their friends finally became legit characters when I first moved to Shanghai. So.. they're.. 4-5 years old! Expect more of Maye!
